What Should I Do When the Check Engine Light Comes On?
A simple way to think through a check engine light and the next useful step.
First: steady or flashing?
A steady light usually means the vehicle computer stored a fault that should be diagnosed. A flashing light can indicate a more urgent problem and is a reason to reduce driving and get the vehicle checked promptly.
Useful first checks
- Notice rough running, loss of power, smoke, smell, or overheating.
- Make sure the fuel cap is properly tightened if your vehicle uses one.
- Have the diagnostic trouble code read instead of replacing parts based only on the light.
The code is a clue, not automatically the name of the failed part.
