What Should I Do if My Dog Broke a Tooth?

What to look for when a dog breaks a tooth and when a veterinarian should examine it.

Look without forcing the mouth open

A chipped tooth can range from a small surface injury to a fracture that exposes the inside of the tooth. Bleeding, a pink or red center, facial swelling, trouble eating, or obvious pain are reasons to contact a veterinarian promptly.

Why an exam matters

Dogs may keep eating even with a painful dental injury. A veterinarian can determine whether the tooth can be monitored, needs treatment, or should be removed. Avoid human pain medicine unless a veterinarian specifically directs it.
